Kate Hamilton

Sr. Information Analyst

Kate Hamilton’s work in publishing (1974 to 1991) evolved into a specialization in using mark-up to facilitate publishing projects. In this role, she was one of the first to use Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML), the mother language of HTML and XML, in a production environment.

With experience in editorial, production, software development, and management, she has focused on how information can be conveyed from the person who has it to the person who wants it, whether as a document or data element.

  • Technical Lead on development of the CDA Implementation Guide and pilot for the National Healthcare Safety Network Healthcare Associated Infection (NHSN HAI) reporting for CDC
  • Technical Lead on development of the CDA Implementation Guide and pilot for the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR)
  • Designer of SGML and XML systems since 1985 including workshop facilitation, information analysis, DTD/schema development, training, documentation and transformation tool development
  • Extensive experience introducing new systems to management and users
  • CDA Release 2 Certified

Her experience using technology in publishing led her to the history of science and technology, which fuels her interest in developing implementation strategies that are effective for the people who are doing the work.

In addition to her work in HIT, Kate is a master gardener.
